For a little self-indulgence in a traditional English tearoom, Betty’s of Harrogate is the place to go.

Situated in the middle of town, overlooking Montpellier Gardens, Betty’s has changed very little since it opened in 1919. A coffee shop, restaurant and bakery all in one, Betty’s offers food and service from a bygone era.

Even on the outside, Betty’s is impressive. A massive curved window complements a door with big brass handles. Inside, the oak panelled counters are filled with everything from fresh cream cakes and bread to quiches and sausage rolls.

Betty’s does all its own baking the old-fashioned way. What runs out runs out, so to get your hands on a Fat Rascal, an oversized rich, fruity scone, make sure you get there early. Other delights include freshly ground coffee and Yorkshire rarebit made with Theakston’s ale.

For the best views, go downstairs where a huge window overlooks the gardens and be served by uniformed staff. The Little Rascals menu is perfect for small appetites and high chairs, nappies, toys and books are available.

Top Tip

There are six Betty’s Café tearooms in Yorkshire but Harrogate is the flagship store. For the over 8’s consider a cookery course.
