Just five-minutes walk from York Minster, Betty’s is a traditional tearoom situated on traffic-free cobbled lanes.
Large glass windows and hanging baskets welcome you to tearooms straight out of the 1920s. Stained glass, cane chairs and immaculately turned out staff in starched white aprons give Betty’s a Palm Court feel but, although it’s quite refined, children are very warmly welcomed.
As soon as you enter (the best seats in the house are by the windows) a Betty’s comic is produced with word searches, a colouring competition and pencils and crayons. Children can choose to have smaller versions of grown-up meals such as salads, pan-fried salmon or chicken breast in basil, or something from their own Little Rascals menu.
Whilst you’re waiting for the food, drool over the pastries, cakes and chocolates in the bakery.
If you’re there for tea, the scones, cakes and coffee are all highly tempting. Sandwiches with their crusts cut off are served on elegant three tiered stands and tea in heavy silver pots with tongs and tea strainer.
Don't go there if you're in a hurry; it's a place to be enjoyed.
