London’s oldest food market, Borough Market brings the finest produce from around the world under one roof. Constantly abuzz, and awash with vibrant colours, the market is alive with smells, tastes and textures.

At 4 ½ acres, this is the largest outdoor restaurant in the country, and the array of produce on offer is almost overwhelming. Breads and hams from Italy, tapas from Spain, cheeses from France, and the very best of British – fantastically fresh crabs and lobsters, delicious Cornish ice-cream and strings of plump Lincolnshire sausages.

With such an abundance of superb fare all around, you are sure to be hungry, so sample some of the freshly cooked sausages and great hunks of cheese, or grab lunch from one of the many hundreds of stalls and get fast food at its best – super fresh fruit juice squeezed to order, and organic burgers cooked as you wait.

Food is clearly one of the main attractions, but Borough is worth a visit just to soak up the atmosphere. The market is ablaze with the vivid colours of vegetables and fruits stacked high and multitudes of flower and herb stalls. With exciting sights and sounds and enticing smells, tastes and textures at every turn, this experience is guaranteed to bring all your senses to life.

Top Tip

Borough Market makes a great day out on its own, or you could combine it with a walk to the Thames or Tate Modern. Be sure to arrive early.
