Lying 8 miles to the east of Newcastle, the traditional fishing village of Tynemouth is a lovely destination for a good old-fashioned day out at the seaside. The pleasures on offer are refreshingly simple - gorgeous beaches, smugglers caves, a lighthouse, pier and ancient ruined priory.
Little ones are likely to want to head straight to the sea, and with two Blue-flag beaches they will be spoilt for choice. There's plenty of parking both on the main street in the village as well as close to the Priory and the Longsands, priced at 80p for two hours. No refreshments are available in the Priory but picnics are welcomed.
