A museum where children can drive a tube train or a bus is guaranteed to be a winner! This museum in the heart of Covent Garden is really geared towards children and is a fantastic place to while away a few hours. The historic building seamlessly manages to blend its beautiful cast iron structure with an exciting contemporary interior space filled with an impressive collection of historic buses and trams from across the ages – many of which children are encouraged to climb on!

At the ticket desk young visitors are given a stamper card that encourages them to collect all the stamps as it guides them around the exhibits. Before visiting make sure you download the ‘Track it down trail’ which helps families locate key exhibits and get the most from a tour of the galleries, with amusing illustrations by Guardian cartoonist Stephen Appleby.

The museum is packed with hands-on exhibits and also has two galleries purpose built for younger visitors, including the
Interchange
Gallery where children aged from 7 to 11 can explore the Museum’s collection in a really fun way. They are encouraged to discover over the last 200 years of public transport in London and they can try on replica costumes and drive an Optare bus. The
All Aboard
Gallery is where under 6′s can get rid of a little excess energy by climbing aboard large wooden models of a bus, train, Tube and taxi. There is also a wooden miniature cityscape where they can enjoy moving buses and trains around London’s most famous landmarks. It’s also a great museum for mums, dads or grandparents as the unique collection of historic posters, artifacts, models, trains and vehicles show how London’s transport has developed from 18th century horse-drawn carriages to its present day status as one of the world’s leading transport systems.
