Host of BBC’s Springwatch, Pensthorpe Nature Reserve near the North Norfolk coast is a superb location for a family day out. Pensthorpe is home to a huge variety of wild birds, but the reserve is not just aimed at twitchers. There is much to keep all members of the family happy.

Pond dipping is a firm favourite, with plenty of opportunity to get close to water-beasties like tadpoles, snails, insects, and even tiny fish. Ponds are specially designed at waist height for little ones - no danger of falling in, but every chance of getting damp and mucky – surely a great reason to give it a go!

Gorgeous landscaped gardens are a treat at any time of year, and wide, buggy-friendly walkways mean they can be enjoyed by the whole family. Wander in amongst the shady trees and flowers in the Woodland Garden or stroll along the stream in the Butterfly Garden.

The birds are the real stars of the show. 171 species call Pensthorpe home, and many more are part of the reserve’s conservation and breeding programmes. From slightly dishevelled and grumpy-looking Marabou to elegant Flamingos and cheeky ducks, every shade and shape of funky tail feather, fabulous plumage and beautiful beak is on display.

Hop on a specially-designed Land Rover for the Wensum Discovery Tour - an expedition to the far-reaches of the park. Look out for deer, owls, woodpeckers and all sorts of flora and fauna. Parents and older children will appreciate the guided tour, whilst younger children will just love bumping through the countryside in an open-sided trailer.

Pensthorpe offers a number of food options. Pack a picnic, grab a snack from the kiosk in the gardens or treat yourself to a delicious meal from the café – relaxed and friendly, it serves mainly homemade food at very reasonable prices.

Top Tip

The café isn’t just for visitors to the reserve, so it is worth bearing in mind if you’re in the area and looking for a bite to eat.
