Regent’s Canal

Camden,
London
NW1,
UK

* approximate times

Arriving at King’s Cross or St Pancras it is so easy to get a taxi, tube or bus across London, but just a few minutes walk from the stations down the Caledonian Road, the footpath along Regent’s Canal offers a rare chance to see the city from a different perspective. Joggers, cyclists, families and dog walkers come here to escape the hustle and bustle and rediscover the city’s past.

Heading North West you can enjoy the sights of brightly coloured narrow boats passing through the locks or moored up at Paddington Basin. Watch out for wildlife – coots, freshwater shrimps, moorhens and bats – as you follow the footpath right into the heart of Camden Lock and market (around 45 mins with a small inquisitive child) or journey beyond to Regent’s Park and London Zoo.

The footpath offers a serenity rarely found in this part of London. The area is due to redeveloped over the next few years, but in the meantime this tranquil corridor through the city takes you past many old warehouses – an historic reminder of the area’s industrial past. And when you have exhausted the young ones, Camden’s coffee bars and stalls offering cuisine from around the world are there to provide sustenance. From Camden Lock, a canal trip on the London Waterbus takes you to London Zoo and Regent’s Park.

Top Tip

The footpath is popular with cyclists and there are no fences between the path and canal, so parents of smaller children may need to be aware. Best avoided in the very early or late hours.
