The Eden Project set the standard for creating a family friendly attraction which is devoted to nature and the environment on the site of a former industrial quarry, and although Stanwick Lakes is a much more modest affair it also offers a highly rewarding visitor experience. It has all the essentials to keep the little ones happy - climbing, water and sand - and older children enjoy the assault course and the chance to ride bikes around the lakes.
Nature abounds at Stanwick Lakes whether it’s the unconventional wooden tree houses with slides or the water features carved out of trees with paddle wheels where the children control the flow of the water and get very wet!. There is a wide choice of circular walks which can take a few minutes or a few hours as they pass through a wide array of natural habitats. And the great thing is that along the way there is always something to discover, whether it’s the lakeside bird hide where you can see a variety of wildlife or the adventure trail with fun rope bridge and zip wire.
The fascinating visitor centre is a real architectural triumph with an organically shaped roof (some areas with turf on) and a large glazed atrium at one end. The centre features lots of hands on activities exploring nature and the environment including a bicycle that children can pedal to power various electrical household appliances. There is also an indoor soft play area for smaller children. Visitors can choose to take a picnic at one of the many designated areas or enjoy good quality food and drinks in the light filled café with an outdoor water terrace overlooking one of the lakes.
As much of the reserve/attraction has been recently developed it is not on most parents’ radar. Billed as ‘Northamptonshire’s most imaginative outdoor activity’ it doesn’t disappoint and it really does offer something for everyone. Discover it before everyone else does!
Take wellies and a change of clothes for the young ones as you won’t be able to keep then away from the paddle stream
