A former Victorian gentleman’s club enjoying uninterrupted views across the salt marshes to the sea beyond, Titchwell Manor strikes the perfect balance of warm, informal welcome and upmarket North Norfolk chic.
The hotel is located near Brancaster, immersed in the wild and unspoilt beauty of the North Norfolk coast. Gorgeous sandy beaches, each very different in character and landscape, any number of pretty market towns, superb places to eat and wonderful family-friendly attractions all lie within easy striking distance, making this an excellent base for a family seaside break.
The hotel itself combines tradition with contemporary style, blending period features such as original fireplaces and mosaic tiled floors with contemporary furnishings for an elegant, laid-back feel. Young, friendly staff offer a warm welcome to make guests feel very much at home. Children will make a bee-line for the telescope on an upstairs landing, looking out to see if they can spot seals, kites or maybe the odd pirate. Rooms are light, airy and restfully decorated in neutral, seaside tones, with huge beds and luxurious bathrooms. Eight rooms are located in the main building, some with sea views. Accommodation is also provided in a traditional cottage and converted barn, or a new single storey extension around the herb garden.
Children’s high-tea is served in the bright and airy bar. Delicious meals are freshly prepared, with a choice of dishes including Manor sausage and mash with onion gravy, pea and ham risotto or fresh tagliatelle with tomato and basil sauce. The food is so good that parents will find themselves clearing the plates in the unlikely event that anything is left over.
Dinner in the candle-lit Conservatory is a grown-up affair. With the sea and so many quality food producers such as the Holkham Estate right on the doorstep, the 2 AA Rosette-holding restaurant has a justifiable reputation for producing superb cuisine. The a la carte menu features locally-caught oysters, scallops, bream, Holkham Estate venison, beef and some mouth-watering vegetarian options, whilst the bar menu has a great haddock and chips, or chargrilled rib eye steak. After supper, relax with a quiet nightcap on a huge leather sofa near the roaring fire, or in warmer weather head to the garden or the terrace with a jug of Pimms.
Probably more suited to families with older children. Pack some activities to amuse early risers, or head to the beach for an early morning walk before breakfast. Larger families or groups can book Rooms 16 & 18, opposite each other at the end of a corridor.
