IIn recent times, Alderley Edge may have become known as the stamping ground of the chic Cheshire set, but venture away from the upmarket shops and restaurants in the centre of the village to find an area of mature oak and beech woodland, breathtaking in its beauty.

The escarpment affords a dramatic panoramic view across the low-lying farmland of the Cheshire Plain to the hills on the edge of the Pennines in the distance. Enter under the shadow of the majestic old trees, to find ancient criss-crossing pathways and stone bridges, where fallen trunks and hollows provide a perfect natural playground. The woodland itself is steeped in myth and legend, and the ancient magic lives on in place names such as Stormy Point, Thieves Hollow and Waterfall Wood. Wizard’s Walk, like most of the other pathways is very buggy-friendly, and at one-mile round trip, it is just about the perfect distance for little legs.

A tea room (not National Trust) located in a tiny converted stone barn close to the car park serves bacon rolls, beans on toast, jacket potatoes and the like, in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. And, when you have had your fill of the great outdoors, there is always the chance for a bit of retail therapy back down in the village.

Top Tip

Keep your eyes on the ground. The area is home to ancient copper mines, and gold bars were found in Artist’s Lane in bygone days, so you never know what treasures you might find!
