If you’re after old-fashioned enchantment and a bewitching day out, then look no further than Bekonscot. Pay for your ticket, turn the corner and enter the quite extraordinary world of the first ever model village.
It’s a sprawling, bustling place on the most amazing scale, packed full of detail and whimsical touches. There are castles and churches, pavilions and polo fields, airports and fairgrounds, coal works and cable cars…. and look out! Here come the goods trains, the passenger trains, the trams, the diesels… Weaving its way around the Village is an extremely busy model railway with its endless supply of engines and wagons that will have every pair of little legs trotting after it.
What might slow them down is the quiz you can buy on entry or the promise of a go on the miniature ride-on train, the train-themed playground might also do it. But then maybe it’s not even worth trying, because every one else will be just as wide-eyed, beguiled and desperate to see what happens next. Let the magic begin.
The Bekonscot Light Railway operates at weekends and during school holidays. Under 2's go free and over 2's are 70p.
