Lake Windermere can be enjoyed in all manner of ways but for a family outing, the Lake District Visitor Centre at Brockhole takes some beating. And despite the daily haul of visitors, it offers a surprisingly tranquil and charming day out.
Brockhole consists of a large house and 30 acre garden which sweeps down to the shores of Windermere. The house is home to a shop and café (check out the stunning views from the terrace), as well as two floors of made-for-children hands-on exhibits – how about building a stone wall or flying high above the fells on a magic carpet? The Arts and Crafts garden offers welcome runaround space and, for older children, a chance to spot Brockhole’s Landscape Literature, the thirteen poems and quotes that have been inscribed on rocks and dotted around the grounds.
The lakeshore here is shallow and safe, making it welly-friendly for a good paddle or even swimsuit-friendly for anyone braver. When you’ve finished splashing around, continue on the circular route (no problem for pushchairs) and discover the ultimate adventure playground which even teens will enjoy.
Brockhole really is somewhere the whole family can picnic, paddle and play - and all for the price of the car park.
The grounds, adventure playground and gardens are open all year – from dawn – which has to be very good news indeed for anyone with children who wake at an unearthly hour. Visit Brockhole by boat as a stop-off on one of Windermere’s cruises.
