Located in the heart of Mayfair, within striking distance of the designer stores on Bond Street, Brown’s retains all the quintessential English charm and elegance that proved such a draw when it first opened in 1837. Now the European flagship of Rocco Forte’s exclusive collection, a recent £24 million make-over has restored Brown’s to its original position as one of the city’s most intimate and appealing hotels.
Steeped in history, Brown’s has a rich past to spark the imagination of guests both young and old. It was here that Rudyard Kipling was inspired to write the Jungle Book, and where Alexander Bell, the inventor of the telephone, made his very first telephone call.
On arrival, impeccably dressed doormen in Top Hats offer a friendly welcome that sets the tone for the rest of the stay. Head up from reception in the wood panelled lift to rooms of understated elegance, where neutral tones and autumnal hues combine tradition with a twist of contemporary style. Adjoining rooms for families can be connected by a pair of giant walk-in wardrobes. All manner of goodies are laid on, from Brown’s teddy bear and helium balloon, Jungle Book jigsaw and colouring book, to bowls of sweets and nectarines, mini dressing gown and character face cloth and toiletries. Modern technology sits comfortably with tradition - all rooms have ipod docking stations and flat screen TVs (with children’s TV channels). WiFi is available in public areas (£10 for 24 hours), and suites have DVD/CD players.
At breakfast, in the Albemarle restaurant, choose from an amazing selection of fruit salads, freshly baked breads and bagels, cheeses, smoked salmon and hams. Eggs Benedict is a particular favourite, or how about boiled duck eggs and soldiers? The elegant Albemarle restaurant, with its linen tablecloths, wood panelling and cool green banquettes, specialises in finest quality British cooking, and has just been awarded three AA Rosettes. Service in the evening is from 5.30pm, ideal for High Tea. A separate children’s menu includes toasted sandwiches, Brown’s mini cheeseburgers, free-range chicken, home-made fish fingers with chips and mushy peas, an irresistible banana split and a variety of intriguing drinks.
The superb Concierge service can provide details of the many family-friendly attractions within walking distance of Brown’s, such as St James’s Park where you can see the resident Pelicans being fed at 2.30pm, or take a guided tour of Duck Island.
Join the shoppers enjoying one of Brown’s famous Afternoon Teas near the open fire in The English Tea Room, accompanied by the soft sounds of the baby grand piano.
After dark, cocktails beckon in the Donovan Bar, where the walls are lined with black and white prints by its namesake Terence Donovan. The bar is a real hub of activity, a meeting place for residents and non-residents, with Live Jazz most evenings.
A truly family-friendly experience. At weekends check out the 'It's a Family Affair' - book a Deluxe room and receive another Deluxe room free.
