Dating back to 1870, Browns of Stilton is a fantastic place to stop off and pick up a picnic that can be as sumptuous or as simple as you like.
Situated in the pretty sandstone village of Stilton and just two minutes from the A1, the shop offers a wonderful alternative to the usual motorway roadside fare.
The emphasis is very much on fine food, reasonably priced. The olde worlde look of the place is matched by splendidly old-fashioned levels of service and the shelves are filled to bursting with all manner of delectable delights.
Everything from punnets of strawberries with pots of cream to dunk them in and simple feasts of bread cheese and fruit through to cured and cooked meats, fancy preserves, posh crisps and fine chocolates make this a DIY picnickers heaven. You can even pick up pressed juices for the children or a bottle of wine for the grown ups.
If you’re on a long journey home from a weekend away, stop by and pick up one of their freshly-frozen meals to pop in the oven when you get home. Visit in May and you may come across the famous annual cheese rolling contest!
