Hidden away down a leafy country lane in Lancashire’s beautiful Ribble Valley, Clough Bottom offers stylish self-catering accommodation on a working organic farm. The hosts, Jane and Harry, are second generation farmers, raising Aberdeen Angus cattle and running a tree and shrub nursery. With children of their own, they are the perfect hosts, encouraging young guests to roam the farmyard to visit the cattle, hens and geese.
Accommodation is provided in three lovingly converted farm buildings - the Grade II listed Coach House, 16th century Woodcutter’s Cottage and more contemporary-styled Saddle Barn.
Woodcutter’s Cottage sleeps 4 in a double and twin bedroom. Decorated simply to maintain the traditional feel of the original building, the cottage is stylish and comfortable, and equipped with every modern facility. Downstairs, the living area has wooden floors, leather sofas and a cosy wood-burning stove. The kitchen area is compact but well-planned with oven, microwave, fridge and an abundance of utensils. The family bathroom has overhead power shower, plenty of fluffy towels and natural lavender toiletries. To the rear of the cottage, a decked area with toddler-proof terrace overlooks the beautiful babbling brook, and provides an idyllic setting for a summer’s evening – even a barbecue is provided.
The welcome is very warm, with fresh flowers and a basket of homemade jam and chutney, biscuits, fair-trade tea and coffee, Tea Bread from the farmhouse kitchen and a slice of the tastiest Lancashire cheese. For added luxury, order a hamper stocked with local bacon and sausage, black pudding, free-range eggs and other breakfast goodies, a tasty home-cooked casserole or freshly-baked cake from the farmhouse. Organic eggs are always available to purchase, courtesy of the resident free-range hens, and guests are encouraged to help themselves to produce from the vegetable garden.
In line with the farm’s organic status, there is a strong environmental policy. A bore hole provides filtered mineral water, recycling is encouraged and the cottages are stocked with environmentally-friendly cleaning products and energy-efficient light bulbs.
Clough Bottom is in the heart of biking and walking country, and bikes can be stored in the main barn. Each cottage comes equipped with extensive guides outlining trails exploring local history and legend, from ‘Walking with the Witches’ to ‘In the Footsteps of JRR Tolkien’, as well as laminated sheets for bird and wildlife spotting.
For those who prefer to eat out – the Three Fishes, Waddington Arms and Bashall Barn are all within cycling distance.
