The 250 acres of impressive grounds and deer park surrounding this sumptuous Georgian mansion near Altrincham are alive with wildlife and provide plenty of opportunity for fun and exploration.
Begin on the lawns close to the house before meandering down shady paths. Signed walks lasting a couple of hours take you along nature trails and fallow deer tracks and they’re all buggy friendly. As well as the deer, bats, birds and rabbits live in the grounds and if you’re very quiet and patient you might even see a badger.
As the park becomes less formal, fountains give way to lily ponds, lime trees and large ant hills, and the trees and wild flowers offer both shade and beauty. Wooden benches at regular intervals make good picnic spots or simply an opportunity for a rest.
All the walks bring you back to the Stables restaurant. Fresh local ingredients are much in evidence in the sandwiches, hot meals and children’s portions. BabyDeli meals are also available there’s a family space to one side which has toys and Lego.
Pick up a free leaflet from the ticket office which will highlight things to look out for on the walks.
