Set in the heart of the Lake District, the Low Wood Hotel nestles in a glorious spot on the shore of Lake Windermere, with fantastic views across the water to the imposing peaks beyond.
Offering comfortable Four Star accommodation, on-site spa facilities, and a friendly welcome for families, this is a great base to relax, whilst exploring some of the Lake District’s most spectacular scenery. The Low Wood Hotel also has much to appeal to those of a more energetic disposition, with its own outdoor watersports centre catering for everything from waterskiing and canoeing to rock-climbing and speed boat rides. There is also an indoor swimming pool and toddler pool.
Rooms are comfortable and spacious. Some of the Feature Rooms and Luxury Rooms have four poster beds and views of the lake. Bathrooms are elegant, with pristine white tiling, and many have roll-top baths. A welcome basket of essentials such as nappies, wipes and a rubber duck is provided for guests travelling with a baby, whilst all children have their own goody bag – ideal for keeping little hands busy with pencils and puzzles whilst mum and dad unpack the bags. Games and films can also be borrowed from the Café to take back to the room.
For dining, the Café del Lago is the informal option and probably best for families. A modern bistro, serving coffee, lunch and dinner with a Mediterranean twist, Café del Lago has lovely views of the lake, and offers al fresco dining on the terrace in warmer weather. The Puppies Platter for children includes light snacks such as beans on toast or soup, or more substantial fare including pasta, chicken or fish, chips and peas. The elegant Windermere Restaurant serves classic European cuisine in chic contemporary surroundings. Starters include tiger prawns marinated in sesame oil, mains feature beef, venison or sea bass and the dessert menu offers bitter chocolate tart or pannacotta, as well as reliable English favourites such as sticky toffee pudding. Wooden floors and chocolate leather chairs contrast with crisp white table linen, and the high ceilings are adorned with sparkling crystal chandeliers. Children under 12 are welcome in the restaurant until 7.30pm and children’s menu, high chairs and booster seats are provided. Tuck into a Full English Breakfast here with spectacular lake views as the light streams in through full-length windows.
As the rain sweeps in over the peaks, or the sun sparkles on the lake, the Lounge Bar is the perfect place to snuggle up with the day’s papers. Warm up with a hot chocolate topped with sticky marshmallows, or sip champagne as the sun sets and the sailing boats drift past.
The hotel is large and there are lots of stairs, often within the same floor level. Best to request a room near the restaurant/bar area if you wish to use your baby monitor, as monitors may not work from other rooms to the communal areas.
